Every wedding has its own flavour, but Michaela and Keiron’s Hackness Grange wedding, tucked into the North York Moors near Scarborough, might be the most ambitious combination I’ve filmed yet: Highland cows on the lawn, a ceilidh in the evening, and a change into traditional dress for a folk dance that had the whole room on its feet. They call themselves Scot n Slav on Instagram, and by the end of the day I understood exactly why. Keiron’s a big Hans Zimmer fan and Michaela loves Friends just as much, something the reception decor made very clear.

I filmed the day as their wedding videographer, so if you’d rather watch than read, the trailer is right below. There’s plenty more wedding videography in my portfolio too.

Morning: a dress, some bubbles and a very Friends-themed countdown

Nearly time.

Someone on this morning had a sense of humour: tucked in among the jewellery and the shoes was a wash bag with its own punchline. Hair was in the hands of Bridal Hair by April, with makeup by Sophie Griffiths, and the room was full of chatter the whole way through.

By the time the hair was finished and the veil ready to go on, the maid of honour was close by, ready for what came next.

Keiron's morning: kilts, tartan and no shortage of banter

While the dress was having its moment, Keiron and the groomsmen were going through their own ritual: full Highland dress, with Keiron in a tartan that’s been in the family for generations, wrapped and belted the old way rather than a modern tailored kilt.

Getting every fold and pleat of a kilt right takes real care.

The reveal

Back in the bridal suite, the dress finally went on, and the reaction said it all: hands to hearts, a few happy gasps, and not a dry eye among the bridesmaids.

Hackness Grange: a Georgian manor by a lake

Hackness Grange sits deep in the North York Moors near Scarborough, a 19th century Georgian manor house wrapped in private grounds, with a lake, woodland and the River Derwent all within reach. It’s one of those venues where every direction you point a camera gives you something beautiful.

The ceremony: florals, vows and a shower of bubbles

The ceremony took place in Hackness Grange’s open-sided pavilion, strung with fairy lights and dripping in blush and ivory florals by Natasha Coustol Floral Designs, ready and waiting for the guests to arrive.

Then came the vows, exchanged under that same floral arch while family and friends looked on.

And with a shower of bubbles, that was that.

Portraits: a bridge, a sword and a dash of sunshine

After the ceremony we slipped away for portraits around the grounds, including a stop on the little green footbridge over the lake, where even the local Highland cattle came to see what the fuss was about.

Meet the Highland cows

No write-up of this wedding would be complete without the cows. Courtesy of Crazy Critters Experience, two Highland cattle joined the whole wedding party for the group photo, rain cover and all.

Memories on the wall, and on the wine

Dotted around the reception were little nods to Michaela and Keiron’s history together: a memory board covered in photographs from over the years, and table names that weren’t numbers but moments instead, straight out of Michaela’s favourite show: The One With The First Wedding, 2019, complete with a photo to match. There was even a Calleo audio guest book on hand, so guests could leave a voice message instead of just a signature.

Drinks, gyros and a very good hug

The reception room had the same soft, romantic feel as the ceremony: blossom trees from Blossom Tree Hire Decor flanking the tables, and a floral arch over the top table.

Out by the drinks reception, That Ziki was serving up Greek food from their van, and Crazy and Co kept the coffee and doughnuts coming. It made for some lovely candid moments, including this big hug by the food truck.

Speeches: a toast from the maid of honour

Then came the speeches, with Michaela’s maid of honour taking the microphone for a toast.

Evening: a ceilidh, a DJ and no shortage of energy

As the evening got going, Piping Services Scotland and PickandMix Disco kept the party moving, with Kieron the Mighty working the room with close-up magic between dances. The dance floor barely emptied all night.

A redovy to close the night: Michaela's Slovakian tradition

If the ceilidh was Keiron’s side of the family having their moment, this was Michaela’s: a redovy tanec right at the end of the night, with Michaela changed into traditional Slovakian dress and dancing with family. A completely different energy, and just as joyful.

Filming a wedding at Hackness Grange

Hackness Grange is tucked into the wooded hills above the Derwent valley, and on a day with low cloud rolling over the moors, it only added to the atmosphere.

Misty view of wooded hills in the North York Moors surrounding Hackness Grange
  • The pavilion. An open-sided, fairy-lit space with florals overhead, giving an outdoor-feeling ceremony with a roof over your head just in case.
  • The grounds. A lake, a green footbridge and acres of woodland give endless options for portraits, with the manor house as a backdrop from almost every angle.
  • The light. Even on a misty day, the wooded valley setting gives a soft, atmospheric look on camera.
  • The Highland cows. Not every venue can say that.

I worked alongside photographer Sam Chipman Photography throughout the day, which always makes for a smoother, more relaxed experience.
