Alice and Finn were married at Burtonfields Hall in May, and if the day had a theme it was family and a proper party. A quiet moment with Alice’s dad before the church, personal touches Alice had made herself, and a ceilidh that led straight into the first dance. I filmed the day as their wedding videographer, so if you’d rather watch than read, the film is right below. There’s plenty more wedding videography in my portfolio too.
Morning: getting ready at Burtonfields Hall
The day started with both bridal parties getting ready under the same roof. Finn and his groomsmen had one of the grand, wood-panelled rooms at Burtonfields Hall, with his best man in a kilt, so morning suits and tartan stood together for the photos. Down the corridor, Alice and her bridesmaids were getting ready surrounded by floral wallpaper, in robes Alice had embroidered herself. The bridesmaids’ dresses were deliberately mismatched too, each in whatever warm shade suited them, mustard, sage, blush and dusty blue: all part of Alice’s own design for the day. Her dress was by Caroline Castigliano, with accessories by Hermione Harbutt and hair and makeup by AS Hair and Makeup Artist.
On the dressing table there was a flat-lay of the details that don’t always get noticed on the day itself: Alice’s shoes, her bouquet from The Allotment Florist, the stationery and her rings, ready to be packed away and mostly forgotten about until the film brings them back.
Before the ceremony: a moment with dad
One moment from the morning stands out to me. Alice’s dad was waiting at the foot of the stairs at Burtonfields Hall in his suit, then held onto her for a quiet moment before they left for the church together. I never get tired of filming that one. It only happens once.
The ceremony
Alice and Finn married at the parish church in Millington, a short drive from Burtonfields Hall, with Finn and his best man waiting at the front as the guests took their seats. Alice walked down the aisle on her dad’s arm, and the two of them exchanged rings and vows under the church’s old stone arch.
Outside afterwards, guests clapped them out into the churchyard and gathered round to hug Alice, while one very small guest was far more interested in waving at everyone from his dad’s shoulders than anything else going on.
Afternoon: portraits, drinks and a drone
Back at Burtonfields Hall, Alice and Finn took some time for portraits in the gardens, with the hall itself as the backdrop, while guests gathered on the terrace for drinks. There was no stiff posing, just the two of them laughing together. If you’d like some ideas for looking natural on camera, I’ve written about how to pose for your wedding video.
I sent the drone up for a group photo on the lawn, with the whole wedding party lined up in front of the hall. It’s one of my favourite parts of a day like this: from the ground you only ever see part of a wedding, but from above you can see everyone who came together for it.
Speeches in the marquee
The wedding breakfast was held in a marquee attached to the hall, with the tables named after Yorkshire places instead of numbers and catering by The Hog and Apple. The cake was made by Hannah R Stanton Baking, a family friend of Alice and Finn’s who deserves a huge thank you. The speeches were a highlight of the afternoon, including one from the best man.
Evening: a ceilidh and the first dance
As the evening set in, Hatchland struck up a ceilidh, and the floor at Burtonfields Hall filled with guests being spun and swapped between partners. Once everyone had caught their breath, Alice and Finn moved to the floor for their first dance, with the whole wedding party gathered round to watch. Finn dipped Alice halfway through to a big reaction from the room, and Hatchland played on to keep the dancing going into the night.
Alice and Finn’s day had everything I love filming: real family moments, a couple who were clearly comfortable being themselves, and a party that kept going well into the evening. Thank you both for having me.
Filming a wedding at Burtonfields Hall
Burtonfields Hall is a Victorian country house at Stamford Bridge, a short drive from York, and it gave me plenty to work with on Alice and Finn’s day. Here’s what stood out to me:
- The wood-panelled rooms. Burtonfields Hall has several grand, wood-panelled rooms, ideal for getting ready in the morning and for a first dance in the evening.
- The gardens and terrace. There’s plenty of space outside for portraits and a drinks reception, with the house itself as a backdrop.
- The marquee. The wedding breakfast and speeches happen in a marquee attached to the hall, so the day can move from house to garden to marquee without anyone needing to travel far.
- From above. With grounds this size, the drone shots at Burtonfields Hall are always worth it.
